How to Protect Your Curls During Summer
Summer can be tough on curly hair due to increased exposure to sun, humidity, chlorine, and saltwater. Here are some tips and tricks to help you protect your curls and keep them looking their best throughout the summer months:
Hydration is Key!!
Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to maintain moisture levels.
Carry a hydrating spray to refresh your curls throughout the day or spray fresh water if you need it.
Protect your hair from the sun
Use hair products that contain UV filters to protect your curls from sun damage if you know will spend a long time outdoors.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat or a scarf to shield your hair from direct sunlight.
Swimming all day long!
Pre-Swim prep your hair. Wet your hair with fresh water before swimming to minimize the absorption of chlorinated or salty water.
Put your hair in a protective style like braids, twists, or buns before swimming. Wear a swim cap to protect your hair from chlorinated or salty water.
Post-Swim care. Rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water after swimming. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine and salt buildup, followed by a deep conditioner.
Don’t forget the nighttime protection
Secure your hair in a high ponytail (pineapple) using a satin scrunchie to prevent frizz and tangling.
Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction and retain moisture and your satin or silk bonnet.
Get regular trims to remove split ends and keep your curls looking healthy and defined.
Enjoy the summer!!
