Products guide for your kiddos

We must agree that caring for a child’s hair can be challenging. The crying and squirming make bath time a nightmare and more so when you don’t know what works best for their hair.

Whether your little one has waves, curls, or coils, it's important to find the right product for their hair. No matter the kid’s hair texture, after spending a day at the beach, school, or the playground (like many days my son comes home) can tangle their hair and leave it unmanageable, which could also lead to tears and a bad experience for them and you as a parent that wants to get things done and have fun with them at the same time.

Curly hair tends to be drier and more prone to frizz and breakage than straight hair, but there are great products that help moisturize, smooth, and protect those curls, making your life easier, of course!

To find the best products for kids with curly hair, I researched products on the market with my son and other kids with different textures. When reviewing products, I considered hair type, ingredients, design, ease of use, and overall value.

Something to keep in mind when shopping for your kids is that toddlers’ hair is different from older kids and this is very important to know this when deciding the hair products we are using with them. With my kids in their early years, I like products with minimal fragrance and more hydrating properties. Also, it’s very important to keep the bath in a no-tears zone.

Make wash day wonderful with these family-friendly styling products. All contain gentle ingredients for our kids and will still get the job done.

Baby Shampoo & wash

  • Cetaphil baby wash & shampoo with organic calendula: Tear-free, paraben, colorant, and mineral oil-free. This is the first product that I used with my boys.

  • Shea moisture baby extra comforting wash & shampoo, oat milk & rice water: This is a hypoallergenic and fragrance-free option, perfect for sensitive skin babies.

Shampoo for Toddlers

  • Shea Moisture shampoo mango and carrot: This is our current favorite. My boy has curly and always tangled hair and works perfectly. It gently cleanses and detangles, so your kiddo’s curls stay bouncy and defined. It’s free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and silicones and smells so yummy.

  • Innersense organic beauty hydrating cream hairbath: This is the best hydration boost for you kids dry, damage hair. Also, you don’t need much product to work on their hair because water is the key with Innersense products.

Detangling

  •  Aunt Jackie’s knot on my watch instant detangling therapy: I have tried this myself and a friend of mine with her daughter, we both have thick hair and both of us do it before washing our hair and she said “It keeps her hair soft while eliminating knots and tangles, her hair is very very knotty and this product is an absolute lifesaver”

  • Cantu Care for kids conditioning detangler:  Two moms mentioned that they use this one to detangle their daughter’s hair after having a protective style for a while to prep the hair for wash day, this way they don’t have to spend time in the shower. They have a range of hair types — from 3B/C to 4A/B — and this spray works on all of them.

Conditioning

  • Shea Moisture conditioner mango and carrot: As I mentioned with the shampoo, this is our current favorite. Even though I detangle his hair with the shampoo, a while ago I started conditioning his hair and immediately I could see the difference, more hydration for sure. It’s free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and silicones and smells so yummy.

  • Innersense Hydrating cream conditioner: Perfect for detangling thick, curly hair, it provides the slip you need to do so, gently. The creamy formula is packed with ingredients like flaxseed oil, shea butter, monoi oil, and aloe that strengthen hair while also moisturizing, which helps with frizz. Don’t forget to use plenty of water with any Innsersense product.

  • Aunt Jackie’s coconut crème recipes, coconut crème deep conditioner: This is perfect for dry, low porosity hair, it won’t weigh the hair down and will leave your kid’s hair shiny, hydrated, and soft.

Styling

  • Mielle Organics pomegranate & honey coil sculpting custard: I love this product because it enhances and defines perfectly the curls. The lightweight gel simultaneously moisturizes and defines. Smells soo good but you can smell it miles away, keep that in mind.

  • Shea Moisture coconut & hibiscus kids curling butter cream: This is perfect for protective styles like twists, moisturizing hair, and protecting it from frizz. This cream could be a bit heavy for fine wavy hair, so keep in mind the amount you use.

  • Kinder curls super curls styler: This water-based and silicone-free styler is perfect for getting light, shiny, manageable curls. One of the comments I got was, “This product is perfect for my 3-year-old boy, doesn’t weigh his curls down and accentuates and styles the ringlets”.

  • Just for me curl peace defining curls & coil cream: Leave the curls hydrated and moisturized. One of the comments I got was “I needed a heavier cream for my daughter during summer vacation and this did the trick. It also delayed the frizz on her twists a couple of days longer. After being in the pool all day I rinsed the pool water and the twists bounced right back”.

Tools

  • Tangle teezer wet detangler millennial.

  • Kids satin bonnets wide band.

  • Microfiber hair towel.

I hope this helps to make wash day a fun and exciting time with your litter ones.
