CURLY CUT BEFORE OR AFTER STYLING?
Why cut after styling the curls? This is a question that I always have when seeing some stylist cutting after styling the curls.
It all comes down to the situation, your client, the hair type, and the end results you want. When cutting after styling, you can see clearly the problem the clients see when they style their hair at home, you can see what works or not to make the final result the one your client wants, and that was what happened with me this time, and you can see it in the photos below, the before and after.
We knew since her first visit and the consultation that I needed to cut all the damaged hair she had, but we planned for a future appointment as my client requested. During this one ( the 2dn appt with me for a wash & style) she couldn’t resist seeing her hair ends like in the first photo, so she asked me if I had the time to cut it off at that moment, so we decided to do it and we both loved the results.
She wanted the damaged hair gone, without losing the length and more volume. To achieve that, it will be a work in progress because if I wanted all the damaged hair gone I had to compromise the length and that was a No, No! so the rest will be gone for the next trim session.
Few things to keep in mind before deciding to cut after styling:
Type of curls: I don’t think it will work the same with looser curls, even though when I dry cut, I double-check after styling to see if I have to make any adjustments.
The hair has to be 100% dry so you don’t cause frizz when manipulating the hair and you can see where the curls live for real.
Make sure your client is okay with having their hair fully dry with a diffuser. In my case, 50% or more of my client doesn’t want me to diffuse their hair more than 60% or dry at all, more in the summer and I respect that.
Time! Because you have to make sure the hair is fully dry, it can make the appt longer to cut after styling.
If you are deep conditioning or coloring the hair in the same appt, this is not for you, you don’t want to waste products.
These are some of the things that I could tell from this appointment. let me know in the comments if you prefer it this way and why.
